Constructed in the 17th century, the ruins of the Chapora fort persist in Northern Goa. It is a majestic fort that is embraced by the Chapora river.
The ancient monument has an amazing history. It was constructed by the Muslim king Adil Shah in 1612 as a bastion against the Hindu. But in 1617, the fort was destroyed and rebuilt by the Portuguese. Later, the Maratha ruler Sambhaji took over in 1684. In 1717 the Portuguese regained their power over the fort, rebuilt it, and operated it until they abandoned the fort in 1892.
The fort is at a distance of 23 km from Panjim. It is located at a distance of 44.2 km from the Goa International Airport. Mapusa is 10.5 km away from these ramparts. There is no public transport available in the interior areas of Bardez. Hence, visitors could travel on their own or hire taxis to reach this location.
The fort is located at the hilltop giving it the perfect height for the sunset panoramas over the Arabian sea. Thus, it is best to avoid the scorching sun overhead and explore the fort late in the evenings or during the morning bliss.
