Divar Island

Divar is a beautiful island set on the Mandovi river. It derives its name from the Konkani word Dipavati which means small island. The ferry connects the island to the mainland. There are three ferry stations operational they are at Old Goa, Ribandar, and Narve.

Initially, the island was home to the Hindu population. But later, the locals abandoned the island after the religious persecution by the Portuguese and the pandemic that broke out. Thus, after the Portuguese took over, Goa was Christianized. Their presence is still evident through the churches and the architecture of the houses that prevail on Divar.

The island is 10 km away from Panjim. For visitors traveling from Goa International Airport, it is 33.8 km away. The best time to explore this slice of heaven is during the festive season. The island is famous for three festivals: Bonderam the flag festival in August, Potekar Goan styled Halloween in October, and the annual feast of Our Lord Redeemer in November.  Although there is nothing much to explore on this island, it is an innate destination bursting with natural beauty, tranquility, and serenity. It is a ‘village stuck in time’ that represents the Indo-Portuguese culture.
